Next Steps - The Future (1/10/24)
Where I See Myself in 5 Years
For the next 5 years, I believe that I will be working within a big film / television industry but don't know specifically the role within. Ideally I want to work for film and try and help out behind the scenes. I do not like office jobs and rather be out and about for work. But in the end I just want to work hard to be successful and earn a lot of money.
Current Experiences
From time to time over the past few years I've been out working with my dad who is a window fitter. What I had to do was carrying the tools to the workplace, remove rubbish from the area, carry the new and old windows to and from workplace and supply the tools needed. The last time I went out to work with him was June 2024. But I have just been recently been employed by Miller And Carter Steakhouse in Stanmore for 8 hours a week from Friday and Saturday evenings. What I've done so far is just serving the food to customers with table numbers there to help me where to go. I plan on working there for the next few months likely to next summer, where I can quit and get my future sorted.
Future Progression Mind Map
Roles - Film Industry (14/10/24)

Runner
A runner is one of the beginner jobs to get into the film industry. Their job is to make sure that production moves smoothly without problems. Also they need to get props, location of shoot and following instructions from director as well. People can become a runner mainly through links that they have or finding someone at the right time and usually lasts for a year. The minimum salary is £11.95 to £16.70 (excluding holiday pay). You can be asked to come into work 6 days a week during production and could work evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Qualifications you need through an undergraduate university course are from completing a multimedia course, drama or theatre studies or media studies to name a few.
Film Director
A film director is one of the biggest roles in the film industry. They are responsible for the filming process with their instructions and bringing their creativity together. Other responsibilities include managing the budget, meeting with all departments and sharing your creative vision on what you want your film to look like. You can work up to 10 - 12 hours a day including evenings and weekends and could possibly travel abroad if production takes place there. There are no set qualifications to get this role but you will need to convince producers, financiers and film distributors to get the role. The route to directing is to develop new skills and getting experience through contacts.
Career Planner Quiz (21/10/24)
I took a careers quiz to see what my top strengths are. All of the questions were statements and whether you believe that you have the quality or not and matches you with the best role suited for you. The top matches I had were Urban designer and Sport and exercise psychologist. There was nothing media related that was found in the screenshots below, the closest one an IT trainer.
CV (22/10/24)
This is a CV that I made a few months ago when searching for a job over the summer. It has been updated with the grade that I got last year and finally getting work which I just started. I've taken out my personal details (address, phone number, email) for safeguarding.

Future Update (5/11/24)
After careful reflection, I have come to the realisation that University is now an option for my future path. I came to the realisation around 8/10/24 when after a few weeks of looking for apprenticeships, there was nothing only technician roles but meaning I might have to move out and live by myself. I quickly decided that the course I want to do if I go uni is either film production or film studies. I need to find the difference between them and the best universities to go there with my UCAS points when I get my results in August. I also like the social aspect of it meeting new friends and being more independent. I'm keeping all options open still looking for apprenticeships and finishing off UCAS and make my final decision on what I want to do in August.
Journalism Talk (26/11/24)
We had 2 people from a South London newspaper agency come to the college and talk about journalism and careers. In that they also had an activity task of fictional articles that would make a newspaper and articles that wouldn't. When that was done they talked about their opinion on what articles would make newspaper vs others that won't. At the end we were given a booklet and sheet of paper about journalism course. I didn't find it interesting because I don't plan on having a career in journalism.
Places Where I Want To Go To University If I Go (26/11/24)
Keeping the University option open, I had to decided what Universities I want to go to. I have to have 5 options and with careful consideration I came to the decision on what Universities are my options. I have 3 options where I can live from home and 2 options I have to move out. The Universities are Westminster, Brunel, Hertfordshire, Bristol and Loughborough. Doing research into these universities and film and media communications made me choose those places as they are mainly the best in the country. I also know people that go to those universities which influenced my decisions, especially leaving home so I'm not going there by myself being homesick. As of 26/11/24 I've not decided my first choice, which is what I'm going to start doing with more research and possibly go to open days. I would still prefer to do apprenticeship but as there's nothing and very hard to get accepted into one made me choose university. Hopefully by August I can decide my proper future route.
UCAS Personal Statement
This is my final write up of my UCAS statement. I had it checked from the careers advisor from the draft that I made and with some adjustments and feedback it was good enough to send.
Photographer Presentation (2/12/24)
A former student of Stanmore College came in for a presentation on photography. He works as a photographer for Barnet FC and also worked for JD Sports and other organisations. He presented his work and what was his favourite projects and worse projects he made, the worse being film based for a new kit launch. He also talked about his inspiration of photography and what he wants to achieve for the future. I found it interesting as I learnt more about working as a photographer and what task / deadlines
University Research (5/12/24)
When looking up on which universities I want to go if I go down that route, there were different factors that came into mind for my decision making. I have specifically chosen to do university courses based on film as that's my speciality and something I like to do. Looking up universities, I don't want to be too far away from home if I decide to move out, which 3 of those options I would be able to live from home. Also, I know people that go to these universities so I wouldn't be completely alone in that sense and the people won't be a factor on my final choice of where I want to go.
I spent days looking up the best universities that have film courses and media and communications courses. One constant that appears in the top 10 of the rankings as of 2024, and number 3 in the guardian rankings, is Loughborough. They only have 1 course in media but it's possibly the best in the country and it's 30 minutes away from Nottingham.
A more film based course I'm interested in doing is Bristol. Bristol has many film studios there that would help me to possibly get a place there after uni. This is where the creators of Wallace And Gromit are based called Aardman Animations as one of the studios. To get in I need a BTEC National Extended Diploma.
